Core Principle

Soft truth

Redwood Finder operates on a principle of soft truth: we prefer publishing rough but useful information over withholding information until it is perfectly verified.

Where information is uncertain, we say so. Where a location is approximate, we say so. Where a measurement conflicts between sources, we note the discrepancy rather than choosing a winner.

What we include

A place is included when there is credible public evidence that giant sequoias, coast redwoods, or dawn redwoods grow there. 'Credible public evidence' includes official websites, verified tree surveys, published forestry records, and trustworthy secondary sources.

We do not include locations based solely on unverified reports or single social media posts without corroboration.

Coordinates

Coordinates are derived from mapping sources, official records, or our best interpretation of publicly available information. Many locations are marked as 'approximate' — this reflects genuine uncertainty about the exact position of trees within a large site.

Do not use coordinates from Redwood Finder as a precise navigational guide. Use the official site's own access information.

Visit information

Opening times, admission charges, and access conditions can change without notice. We recommend checking the official website for each place before visiting.

Some places listed may be on private land where public access is not guaranteed.

Sources & Updates

Sources are cited on each place page. We use a range of source types: official garden and estate websites, Forestry England records, National Trust information, Royal Botanic Garden publications, local authority records, and published tree surveys.

Wikipedia is used as a reference source for species information and historical context, not for place-specific claims. Official source data is pulled in batches and stored with source snapshots before any curation happens. Public place pages reflect reviewed canonical records.

What we are not

  • A strict registry or verification database
  • An authoritative source for tree measurements
  • A replacement for official garden or estate information
  • A real-time access and conditions service
